Without a rug, dining chairs and table can feel like they’re just floating in the middle of a larger space, especially in open-plan layouts. A rug underneath frames the whole set as one zone.
It signals, “This is the dining area,” even if there are no walls around it. Chairs sit within a defined boundary, and the eye understands the layout more easily. It also adds texture and warmth underfoot, which makes meals feel a bit cozier.
Just make sure the rug is big enough so pulled-out chairs still stay on it.
