Why should you occasionally open rarely used windows to check that they still slide or open smoothly?

Date:

Some windows almost never get opened—maybe behind furniture, in a spare room, or on the side with a bad view. Over time, dust, paint, rust and lack of use make the frames stiff. One day when you finally need fresh air, or in an emergency, they refuse to budge.

Opening them once in a while, even just partway, ensures the tracks stay active. You can spot if they’re sticking, squeaking, or if the locks are jammed. A little cleaning, oiling or minor adjustment at that stage is easy.

Waiting until they’re completely stuck often means calling in a professional, removing frames, or even replacing parts. Small motion now avoids big expense later.
